Passwordless Sign-In¶
Synderys supports passwordless sign-in using WebAuthn security keys and passkeys. This method is faster and more secure than traditional username-and-password authentication because it relies on cryptographic credentials stored on your physical device.
Before You Begin¶
You will need:
- A WebAuthn-compatible security key (such as a YubiKey 5 series) or a device with passkey support (such as a laptop with a fingerprint reader or a phone with Face ID)
- Your security key or passkey must already be enrolled in your Synderys account (see Setting Up Multi-Factor Authentication for enrollment instructions)
- A supported browser: Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari (latest version recommended)
What Are Discoverable Credentials?¶
With passwordless sign-in, your security key or passkey stores a discoverable credential (also called a resident key). This means the key itself knows which account to use — you do not need to type a username or password. Simply touch your key and you are signed in.
Passwordless Sign-In Steps¶
The Synderys login page is a single screen. The username field and the Sign in with security key button are right next to each other — there is no separate "choose your method" page anymore. Use the security-key button before typing your username.
-
Open your web browser and navigate to https://auth.synderys.com.
-
On the login screen, click the Sign in with security key button. (Do not type your username first — the button handles identification for you.)
-
When your browser displays the security key prompt, insert your security key into a USB port (or hold it near your device if using NFC). If you are using a passkey on your phone, laptop, or Mac, follow the biometric prompt (Face ID, Touch ID, fingerprint, or Windows Hello).
-
Touch the sensor on your security key when the light blinks, or complete the biometric check on your device.
-
After successful verification, you are signed in and redirected to the Synderys application portal (or straight back to whichever app you were trying to reach).
What to expect
The entire sign-in process takes just a few seconds. After touching your key, you will see a brief loading indicator and then land on the Synderys Application Portal — no additional MFA step is required because your security key already provides two-factor assurance (something you have + something you do).
Why Use Passwordless Sign-In?¶
| Benefit | Details |
|---|---|
| Phishing resistant | Security keys use origin-bound credentials that cannot be intercepted by fake login pages. |
| No passwords to remember | Your key is your credential — no need to manage complex passwords. |
| Faster sign-in | One touch replaces typing a username, password, and MFA code. |
| CMMC compliant | Hardware-bound authenticators satisfy NIST SP 800-171 requirements for multi-factor authentication. |
Using Multiple Devices¶
If you have enrolled more than one security key, any of your enrolled keys will work for passwordless sign-in. We recommend enrolling at least two keys — one for daily use and one stored securely as a backup.
Troubleshooting FAQ¶
Q: The "Sign in with security key" button does not appear on the login page. : Ensure you are using a supported browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari) updated to the latest version. Some older browsers do not support WebAuthn discoverable credentials. The button appears on the same screen as the username field — there is no separate page to navigate to.
Q: My browser shows "No credentials found" when I touch my key. : Your key may not have a discoverable credential enrolled for Synderys. Sign in with your username and password first, then follow the MFA enrollment guide to register your key with the discoverable credential option enabled.
Q: My security key is not recognized when I insert it. : Try a different USB port. If using NFC, hold the key steady against your device for two to three seconds. Ensure your operating system has the latest USB and security key drivers.
Q: Can I use a passkey stored on my phone instead of a physical key? : Yes. If your phone supports passkeys (iOS 16+ or Android 14+), you can use your phone's biometric sensor to sign in. When the browser prompts for a security key, select the option to use a passkey from a nearby device and follow the on-screen instructions.
Q: I clicked the security-key button by mistake — how do I sign in with a password? : Reload the login page (or click the browser Back button) to return to the username field, then type your username as normal and continue with your password.
Q: I lost my security key. : See Account Recovery for steps to regain access. Contact IT immediately so they can revoke the lost key from your account.
